Microgreens are an incredibly versatile, nutrient-dense addition to any diet, perfect for home gardeners, foodies, and health enthusiasts. These young, edible greens pack a flavorful punch and are often richer in vitamins and minerals than their mature counterparts. Growing microgreens at home is simple, sustainable, and satisfying!
Benefits of Microgreens:
1. Nutrient Density: Microgreens can contain up to 40 times more nutrients than mature plants, making them a potent addition to your meals.
2. Quick to Grow: Most microgreens are ready to harvest in 7–21 days, offering a fast yield for your effort.
3. Year-Round Gardening: Microgreens grow indoors without the need for garden space, allowing year-round cultivation.
4. Culinary Versatility: Use microgreens to elevate salads, sandwiches, smoothies, and gourmet dishes with flavor and visual appeal.
How to Grow Microgreens
1. Gather Supplies:
• Microgreens kit (seeds, growing trays, and growing medium like soil or coco coir).
• Spray bottle for watering.
• Optional: blackout dome for germination.
2. Prepare the Growing Tray:
• Fill the tray with about 1–2 inches of your chosen growing medium.
• Evenly spread the seeds across the surface, following the specific amounts provided below.
3. Water and Cover:
• Gently mist the seeds with water.
• Cover with a blackout dome or another tray to create a dark, humid environment conducive to germination.
4. Monitor Growth:
• Keep the tray in a warm spot out of direct sunlight until germination.
• Remove the blackout cover once seeds sprout, usually within a few days.
5. Provide Light:
• Place the tray in bright, indirect sunlight or under a grow light.
6. Harvest:
• When the first true leaves appear, usually 1–3 inches tall, use scissors to snip the greens just above the soil line.
• Rinse and enjoy fresh or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
