March Seed Starting Guide (Zones 1-10)

March is here and that means it is time to start seeds!
March is the perfect time to get a jump start on all the spring garden plans and start seeds for spring planting. No matter where you live, there are seeds that you can be starting now!
Here is a seed starting guide for March in zones 1-10.
Seed Starting Guide for March
Zones 1-4
For those in Zones 1-4 you can start these seeds indoors now (or soon) depending on your zone.
Seeds to start INDOORS in March:
Middle to late March start these seeds (indoors):
Leafy Greens such as:
Mustard seed, Turnip seed, Collards seed
*Note: Now is the time to order crops that will be direct sown soon: Carrots, potatoes, parsnips, Lettuces, Radishes, beets, peas - also order tomato and pepper seeds now for next month.
Zone 5
Zone 5 growers can start these seeds indoors in early March:
Start these seeds indoors mid-March:
*Note: Check your seed inventory for seeds that you will direct sow soon like pea seeds, seed potatoes, carrot, parsnips, radish, lettuces and beets!
Don’t forget to order your spring crop seeds soon.
Zone 6
Gardeners in Zone 6 can start all their cold weather crops indoors under grow lights at the beginning of March if they have not already done so in February.
These include:
Early to Mid-March Start these seeds INDOORS:
*Note: If you haven’t ordered seeds yet …do it soon! Order your pepper and tomatoes seeds now.
You will be starting those indoors in the middle to end of this month.
**Seed potatoes, carrot, parsnips, peas, radish, lettuce, and beet seeds will be able to be direct sown in late March or Early April.
Zone 7
Zone 7 Growers need to start these seeds Indoors in late February to Early March:
Zone 7 growers can direct sow or transplant these cold weather crops mid to late March.
These seeds include:
*Growers in zone 7… don’t forget to order your spring crop seeds soon!
Zone 8
For Zone 8, March is a big month for planting! Ideally, you should have already started your cold weather seeds in and those should be ready to be transplanted out in the garden soon.
(Don’t forget to harden off your plants before transplanting)
Transplant these cool season crops outdoors in early to mid-March:
Leafy Greens such as:
Mustard seed, Turnip seed, Collards seed
Direct Sow cool season seeds outdoors early to mid-March. These include:
Potatoes
These seeds should already be started or can be started now indoors:
*Start your Spring Planting Seeds indoors now! These include:
Note: Don’t forget to harden off plants before transplanting! Also, don’t forget to up pot your tomatoes and peppers soon!
Zone 9
In zone 9, growers can start these crops by direct sowing them in early March.

Transplant these crops:
Mid to late March Direct sow or transplant these crops:

Zone 10
Growers in zone 10 can start a wide variety of seeds in March indoors and outdoors!

March is an exciting month for gardeners! Spring’s arrival is inching closer, and the time has definitely come to kick our garden plans into high gear. All our winter garden planning finally gets to jump off the paper and into the seed trays! Watching the first seeds of the season pop up from the soil never gets old…little sparks of hope for another wonderful year in the garden.
